The Sky is Falling

I fell off the face of the earth a few months ago, huh? Sorry. Also, not very sorry because #selfcare and whatnot.

On March 6th, I got the horrifying call that my brother passed away. My family mourned and prepared a sendoff and basically shattered into little tiny pieces that we tried to put back together. Some pieces are irreparably damaged, others are missing entirely. I miss my big brother more than words can convey, and almost 4 months later, I still break down when I drive past the elementary school we used to ride our bikes to every morning. If you want a little snippet of an idea of the type of person he was, please read the obituary I wrote for him. He was such a kind hearted person and will be forever missed.

You’ll forgive me for not writing, right? I’ve been doing my nails as needed, but my attentions have been elsewhere with other arts. My first flutter of oh this might be fun came with Dipalicious builder gel this week. I decided to try to make claws and honestly, it wasn’t so bad! There’s a learning curve and it was hard to get the forms to fit flush with the bottom of my nail (is there a trick for that?), but the end result was definitely worthy of wearing. I’m having an awfully hard time typing, so not sure how long they’ll stay this way, but for now I’m enjoying it.

The second flutter of nail joy came with trying to make neon tie-dye nails. I mixed some Zooty powders with gel base and painted on in rainbow formation, then used a dotting tool to create little lines. It was pretty cool! The colors were Avon Colleen, Shooting Star, Can You See Me Now?, B.A.G, and Frozen Howl. I used Avon Colleen on the other nails as well.

I’m going to be honest, this bright mani made me feel a little like a low class hooker when done on these claws. It lasted all of 24 hours before I drilled down and applied my absolute favorite dip, Zooty Exposed. If I could pick one dip powder to use the rest of my life, this would be it! Boring, right? But so so perfect. It’s a little rough after being drilled down, redone and not oiled, but meh. I love it.

Here are the other things that have kept me busy lately- drawing, painting, knitting, science experiments, pirate week and probably most of all, reading! If you want to see my reading challenge on Goodreads, follow me here! Also, I’m totally addicted to Book of the Month. If you want to see what it’s about and maybe get sucked in too, use my link to get your first month for $9.99 ($15 after that ;)).

Probably my top project was this sweater I got to test knit for @AliciaPlums, the Fernwood Drop. Omg y’all! Talk about morale boosting! I was worried about the crop top (which I modified the pattern for, but still), but #normalizemombods and all that! I had so many people ask where I bought it from. You should totally check it out when it’s released. 100% would knit again.

Anyway, missed you guys ❤

XOXO- Mel

  1. So sorry for your loss. Sending my condolences and deepest sympathies. Siblings are our first bfs and that bond deepens as we grow. The obituary was beautiful.
I joined some months back, during the height of the pandemic and right after I began dipping my own nails. I never comment however this blog addition is so heartfelt and helpful. I will go back now and read the other editions. I also starting using Dipalicious builder gel and I Love it, too! Have you tried the other colors or the remover gel? They’re bomb as well. Love that it’s HEMA free. Luckily, I don’t get dip flu. I haven’t heard of Zooty, but I’m always looking for the perfect nude for my darker skin tone so I will check them out. Do you have a discount code?

I also restarted my Goodreads acct., ordered my BOTM selection and I’m planning to start a new audiobook. I’m a teacher vacationing with my teen son at my mom’s in Palm Coast, Florida which is about 45 min. from Jacksonville (where one of my three sisters and her family lives). My mom has totally called me on my social media habit and I’m going to take a break and spend more time being present with my son. We have science projects at home in Maryland to do TOGETHER! Love your pics, paintings and drawings.

    Enjoy your summer!
